The lists are starting to roll in as we count down to the end of the year. The top titles of the year include The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao, Tree of Smoke (also the National Book Award winner), A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Then We Came to the End, and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

My favorite read of 2007 was The Maytrees, Annie Dillard's latest novel. Her pared-down treatment of the complexities of mature love (and subtle characterizations) can stimulate thoughtful reflection about relationships and how they develop over time.
My favorite "read" this year has been Janet Evanovich's series about Stephanie Plum. I had put off reading her series for who knows why, and decided last May to listen to the CDs between home and work. The reader, Lorelei King, makes the stories come alive with a wide range of character-rich voices. Evanovich's writing is sometimes slapstick funny, with fires, explosions, and high speed chases, followed by Stephanie's "It's not my fault!" I can't believe I'm listening to Lean Mean Thirteen, the last of the series to date and that the rumor is that there will only be one more! Bummer! If you enjoy a mystery and want to add a bunch of laughs, listen to this series. (A word of caution, though: some of Evanovich's characters are pretty "salty" with their language. If you're offended by such, this series isn't for you.)
Neil DeGrasse Tyson's "Death by Black Hole and other Cosmic Quandaries" is the one I would choose as my "favorite" for 2007. The guy is witty and funny but not overly eurdite.
